Cake made from Grandson's Drawing

Ethan drew me a picture of what he wanted for his January birthday.
He asked for vanilla, strawberry and chocolate.
I made a 6-layer 6" round cake with those flavors.
The tree, star, packages and snowflakes were what he drew.
He was excited about his cake. We had fun cutting it to serve.

Epiphany 2020

This is my cake for our Epiphany Open House on Epiphany Sunday, January 5, 2020! It is a 10-inch round 2-layer cake. The bottom layer is Strawberry (with red food color added to make it red) and the top layer is French Vanilla. Strawberry filling is between the layers. The top star is Rolled Fondant and the Silhouettes of the wisemen on the sides are also Rolled Fondant. The little stars are candies.

This cake is the bluest cake I have ever made. I think it represents the night sky well for the travelers. And it will turn your tongue bluegreen!

King's Cake (Gluten Free)

This is a "King's Cake" -- a pastry filled bread for the celebration of Epiphany. The filling is cream cheese and walnut pieces. It is gluten free and served at my January 5, 2020 Epiphany party. A "baby Jesus" is hidden in it.

Christmas Dinner Desserts

10-inch Minced Meat Pie. The crust is gluten free. I used my Christmas cookie cutters to make the top crust. I brush milk on the crust and sprinkle sugar to get it to brown nicely.

Cherry Cobbler. I used 2 cups of cherries and my daughter suggested twice as many next time. It was delicious anyway!

Three Kings and the Star

The Three Kings and the Star cakes. The star and the king farthest right are Lemon Cake -- each is half of a 10" round cake. The first two kings are Red Velvet cake -- each is half of a 12" round cake. These cakes were made for our Epiphany Open House on Sunday, January 6, 2019.

I made cakes similar to these back in the 70s. At that time, my mother was with me and she helped me with ideas and suggestions. It was such fun to create with her. As I made these, I couldn't help but think about her and remember. I'm still doing cakes, but I miss you Mom!

King's Cake for Epiphany!

The cake is a gluten free Pastry cake with Cream Cheese and Walnut filling. Decorated in four "Royal" colors and candy "beads." I made it for our Epiphany Open House on Sunday, January 6, 2019.

Remembering a Loved One

This cake is a Red Velvet 8"-round two-layer cake with Cream Cheese frosting. It's made during Advent 2018 for a sad reason. I hope the cake brings some peace and joy to Austin's mother and siblings this season. Austin died in February or March --a victim of a tragic car accident where he was run over. Red Velvet was Austin's favorite cake flavor. Rest in peace Austin. You are loved and missed.

Epiphany King Cake

This is a gluten free King Cake. I made it for our Epiphany Party. It is a pastry filled with Cream Cheese and walnuts, rolled up and placed in a circle. It is frosted with purple, green and yellow "royal" colors. The person who gets the "Baby Jesus" in his or her serving becomes the king for the evening and wears the crown. That person is king for the year and plans next year's party!

Happy Birthday Jesus!

I made this Red Velvet 9x13 cake for my church's Birthday party for Jesus on December 16 at the fellowship potluck dinner. Hope, peace, joy and love are representative of the four candles lit in the Advent season, as we await the arrival of the Christ child.

"The Twelve Days of Christmas" Candy

In addition to cookies, I used my cookie cutters to make the 12 days of Christmas candies. I used white, red, green and dark chocolate candy melts. Most of the time they worked very well.

Below is the story behind the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas." Hope you enjoy this learning.

From 1558 to 1829, the Roman Catholics were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning, plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

Partridge in a Pear Tree is Jesus Christ.
Two Turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.
Three French Hens stood for faith, hope and love.
Four calling birds are the 4 gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first 5 books of the Old Testament.
The six geese a laying stood for the six days of creation.
The seven swans a swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit - prophesy, serving, teaching, exhortation, contrition, leadership and mercy.
The eight maids a milking were the eight beattitudes found in Matthew 5:3-10.
The nine ladies dancing were the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The ten lords a leaping were the ten commandments.
The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.
The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the 12 points of belief in the Apostle's Creed.
